Support for carers

skip to main content

An informal carer is usually a family member, friend or neighbour who provides regular or ongoing support to someone who needs help. Carers can include young people or children caring for a parent or sibling, or adults over the age of 18 caring for a partner or adult child.

If you give unpaid care to someone you can ask for a carers assessment which can help to put you in touch with support for you in your caring role.

Types of caring
'Caring' for someone covers lots of different things including:

  • Helping with washing, dressing, eating
  • Taking them to regular appointments
  • Managing their medication
  • Helping with housework
  • Financial Support
  • Keeping them company when they feel lonely or anxious

About a carers assessment
A carer's assessment is free, and you can have an assessment even if the person you care for does not get any help from the council. A carers assessment might recommend things like:

  • someone to take over caring so you can take a break
  • gym membership and exercise classes to relieve stress
  • help with taxi fares if you don't drive
  • help with gardening and housework
  • training how to lift safely
  • putting you in touch with local support groups so you have people to talk to
  • advice about benefits for carers

You do not need the permission of the person you are caring for to request a carers assessment. You are entitled to ask for one in your own right. However, you can request a combined assessment where you will be assessed at the same time as the person you care for has their needs assessment.

How to request a carers assessment
If you are a resident of Trafford and want to find out more information on carers assessments and how to request one, visit the Trafford Adult Social Care website.

Alternatively you can contact Trafford Carers Centre which is a local non-profit organisation that supports unpaid carers looking after someone who lives in the Trafford area.  They support adult carers (aged 25+), young adult carers (aged 16-25) and young carers ( aged 5-15), helping them to recognise their own needs, to improve their physical and mental wellbeing and ensure they are fully understood, valued and supported in their caring role. Most of their services are free, and everything you tell them will be treated confidentially. You can refer yourself to ask about help and support.

To contact the centre, follow the link to make an online referral with Trafford Carers Centre or call the helpline open on Monday - Friday - 9:00am- 4:30pm on 0161 848 2400 (option 1)
